Nikhil and KJ met at UC Berkeley and founded Kaizen in 2022. Nikhil was an early engineer at Anduril Industries, where he led engineering and design teams building the drone interfaces military operators depend on in the field. KJ came through investment banking at William Blair, then ran business operations and finance as Chief of Staff at Flockjay. They started Kaizen to build mission-critical software for America's public services, designed around the people who actually use it.

Board and investor use. These are active recruiting conversations, not commitments, and several individuals are currently employed elsewhere. Not for distribution to agencies or inclusion in any proposal.
Chase Ausley
Principal Deputy Director and Chief Product Operating Officer, Office of Health Technology and Products, CMS
Principal Deputy Director of CMS's new Office of Health Technology and Products and its Chief Product Operating Officer, arriving from a Director role at the U.S. DOGE Service. Working relationships across HHS, CMS, Treasury, the Department of War, and the VA, and has led efforts to unwind entrenched legacy contracts and re-compete them, giving him mechanical knowledge of federal buying rather than adjacency to it. Private-sector background at CareBridge, Elevance Health, Optum, SAP Concur, and The Advisory Board Company. Has already surfaced pipeline for Kaizen at the Administration for Children and Families and the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office.
Status
Verbal acceptance on terms; signature pending. Target start end of October.
Samantha Segall
Chief Growth Officer, Shift5
Chief Growth Officer at Shift5, the onboard-data and operational-technology cybersecurity company serving defense and critical infrastructure. Joined September 2025 as SVP, Growth Officer and was formalized into the C-suite in June 2026, with a remit covering federal sales, marketing, and external affairs. Her strength is government affairs: she is a registered lobbyist with deep standing in Washington. Kaizen reshaped its Head of Government Affairs search around her into a broader Head of Federal Growth role spanning government affairs, international expansion, and top-of-funnel go-to-market. She has already advised the company on its DC strategy.
Status
Final stage. Onsite complete; references underway.
Dawn Zimmer
Chief Information Officer, U.S. Department of Energy
Sitting CIO at the Department of Energy, made permanent in November 2025 after serving as Acting CIO and Principal Deputy CIO. More than 25 years across government, academia, and the private sector in enterprise IT modernization, cybersecurity, and digital service delivery, including senior IT leadership at the FAA and the Department of Justice, and Executive Director of IT Engagement and Experience at Virginia Tech. Named a 2026 Wash100 winner. The value to Kaizen is her standing inside the federal CIO community.
Status
Early. Introduced through a16z; role scope in discussion.
Kaydee James
Chief of Staff, Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office, U.S. Department of War
Chief of Staff to the Department of War's CDAO, overseeing strategic technology initiatives including the War Data Platform and Maven Smart Systems, plus budgeting, contracting, and coordination across government and industry. Came to CDAO from Chief of Staff of the U.S. DOGE Service, and before government held leadership roles at Meta's Reality Labs and Salesforce. For Kaizen the value is access and workforce strategy: her office is where Tradewinds awardable status sits.
Status
Exploratory. Timing did not align earlier this year; conversation reopened in August.
